Canon non-binary characters

Welcome to FYME’s list of Canon Non-Binary Characters!  This list is a work in progress, as mod Cory finds more characters and media to share.  Please let me know if there are any characters that should be added!

A few disclaimers: non-binary characters aren’t always portrayed positively, or they are written using language that isn’t sensitive to our real experiences as non-binary people.  But, members of marginalized groups sometimes connect with bad representation, and some of us take those characters and create something positive.  So as many non-binary characters as I can find will be on this list. These are not necessarily recommendations.

A new disclaimer: Cory has not reviewed all of the sources of information here. I’m taking suggestions from followers as for what to add.  The non-binary status of some characters may be open to interpretation, and the “canonness” of it could be up for debate. Other than in webcomics, we rarely get confirmation from creators about whether a character with ambiguous or non-conforming gender is actually non-binary, so we are using a loose definition of “canon.”  Also, I cannot vouch for the content of all of the comics/books/etc listed.

Also, I made this gif-heavy. I hope that won’t cause any problems.

So now let’s get to the list:

Cartoons/TV

  • Apos: from the anime RIN ~Daughter of Mnemosyne~.  Apos is the primary antagonist, an intersex angel who believes themself to be a god. (h-slur cw at the links)
  • Baron Ashura: from anime Mazinger Z, they were a cyborg created using the remains of a Mycenaean couple.
  • Berg Katse: from Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, they are a villain who was created by fusing fraternal twins in the womb.  Katse changes gender almost every year.
  • BMO: A sentient robot from Adventure Time whose pronouns and gender presentation is fluid. (pictured above)
  • The Crystal Gems: From Steven Universe, the gender of the gems is basically “gem.”  In fact, all gems introduced are non-binary
  • Envy: a shape-shifting Homunculus from Fullmetal Alchemist with no gender.
  • Kayli: from @mistlandscomic uses Xie pronouns and is made of stardust.
  • Neferpitou: from Hunter X Hunter is a cat-humanoid Chimera Ant.  Pronouns are not used when referring to Neferpitou.
  • Piccolo Daimao (King Piccolo) and other Namekians: from the Dragon Ball series, Piccolo Daimao was an alien and the main villain.  He has many children, which are all produced asexually. All Namekians appear “masculine” but they are all the same gender (h-slur cw at links).
  • Puppy: from Aerial Magic is a genderless spirit.
  • S. LaFontaine: Mad Scientist from Carmilla, comes out as non-binary through the course of the series. (the ginger in the second gif above)
  • Star Trek: There are several alien races in Star Trek canon that are non-binary, and there were a few characters that were the focus of individual episodes (often with tragic stories).  For the most part, Star Trek discussions of gender has a strong focus on how these different genders procreate. There are no trans characters in Star Trek canon.
    • Andorians: This race was revealed to have four genders in DS9 novels.  Humans refer to two of the genders as female, and two of them as male.
    • Axanar: an androgynous race introduced in Enterprise ep Fight or Flight. The episode did not focus on their gender.
    • J’naii: Their race once had two sexes, but they evolved to be a genderless, androgynous race.  Soren was the focus of a TNG episode called The Outcast.  She identified as female and was forced into conversion therapy (the closest we got to a trans character).
    • Trill: is a species that lives in humanoid hosts.  When their hosts die, they will move to a new host, frequently changing gender through their lives. Odan was the focus of TNG ep The Host, in which they moved from a male to a female host (also, Odan is part of a sub-group of Trill with ridges, but most Trill have spots on their faces).
    • Vissians: a race that has three genders: male, female, and cogenitor.  The cogenitors are treated more like animals than people.  The focus of the Enterprise episode, Cogenitor, has a tragic ending.
  • Stevonnie: Also form Steven Universe, Stevonnie is a fusion of the half-gem/half-human Steven and of the human Connie.  Creators of the show confirmed Stevonnie uses they/them pronouns. (pictures in the first gif)
  • Unity: from Rich and Morty is a collective hivemind.  It uses both male and female avatars (cory does not recommend this show).
  • Yivo: A sentient, extraterrestrial being from Futurama.  Shkle has shkler own set of pronouns.

  • Ba’al and other monsters: Many of the monster from The Last Halloween do not appear to have gender, and Ba’al used they pronouns
  • The Bandits from Rock and Riot.  A gang of non-binary kids in the 1950s.
  • BLL: witch with anthropomorphic traits from some short comics by @solomonfletcher
  • Cayli: agender friend of one of the main characters of Always Human (@alwayshumancomic)
  • Dad: father of the protagonist of The Last Halloween.  I literally can’t remember if we’ve learned their name.  They are gender non-conforming and use they pronouns.

  • Irma/Irving/Ir* from The Princess, is also gender-fluid, we think. We’re not entirely sure because Ir* is still kinda developing their identity, being a young kid and all. But the comic’s main character, Sarah, knows very well that she is a girl and will not accept anyone telling her that she can’t know that just because she’s a child. Anyway lovely trans kids all around, it’s beautiful. Written by a trans woman who wished she had a comic like that when she was Sarah’s age.
  • JD: friend of the main character of Shades of A: a fat, kinky, exuberant enby.

  • MinorityMonster: includes several non-binary monster characters in one-shot comics
  • Nails and Teeth: I’m not familiar with the comic, but there are several non-binary, monstrous characters.
  • Neokosmos: According to fans, no one in this comic is cis. There are several characters that we have more details about:
    • Tye and Z: Human childred-raised genderless -they pronouns
    • Iris: Human child-raised genderless but transitioned to female (not non-binary)
    • Xaveria and Zehra: Aliens (Compies) that are monogender and use they pronouns most of the time, but use she in intimate contexts.
  • Neve from Ignition Zero is gender-fluid, but they also are a drag queen! And they get along really well with fairies and spirits, even the dangerous ones, which is kind of the main theme of this comic. Also the comic’s main character is a lovely gay ace boy and the author is actually genderfluid.
  • Nokia: main character from Immortal Nerd, a comedy/SF webtoon about a brightly-colored future where gender diversity is respected.
